Asked by a friend how to think about networking, I advised:
There are least five possibilities for each networking moment and it is not always clear which one will result:
- Learning the landscape (where opportunities will lie, trends that generate opportunities)
- Obtaining access to someone in their rolodex (now that they know what you are looking for)
- An actual career opportunity
- Learning about an opportunity they know about
- A Chance to make an impression that will later result in one of the above
