Four Jobs of the CEO

I made a mind-o in my last post. My apologies. I wrote:

The CEO has three jobs:

1. To decide and do those things which only the CEO can decide and do
2. To lead and direct others to do what they need to do consistent with overall goals
3. To create the climate where people do what they need to do in a way the CEO wishes they would do them (work ethic, behaviors with others, integrity et al). This is the focus of culture.

There is a fourth job:

4. To ensure that there is at least one successor ready to take over the post of CEO when needed.

That’s just my view. What’s yours?

Extraordinary Leaders

by Stephen H. Baum (Random House)

"Lessons for life about the core leadership traits of character, risk taking decisiveness and the ability to engage and inspire followers."
--Jim Clifton, CEO, The Gallup Organization
